Cool as

In a slight twist of fate from 2012 when the instantly recognisable Eddie Stobart livered Escort RS took part in the live stage arena, on Saturday 22nd February 2014 the Prepfab prepared and McRae driven RS1800 known simply as LSV171 will be offered for sale at Race Retro. Silverstone Auctions will host the sale for the third year in succession and are very proud to have LSV171 headlining their catalogue.

Commenting on the car, Nick Whale, managing director, Silverstone Auctions, said: “We’re incredibly proud to offer a competition car with such provenance. Given the high octane surroundings of Race Retro the car is a perfect fit and is sure to prove popular with historic motorsport fans.”

Prepared in 2006 and presented in its signature Eddie Stobart colours, whilst respecting  the time honoured Eddie Stobart tradition of being christened ‘Anna Becky’, LSV171 boasts an incredible spec that includes; full Prepfab strengthened body, welded in Safety Devices cage, big tunnels front and rear, alloy arches, fibreglass bonnet, full FIA rally interior and we think most importantly a screaming 9,500rpm Sherwood 2.0litre BDG putting out incredible 260bhp breathing in through twin 48 Weber’s and out via a Tony Law exhaust. Combine this with a ZF 5-speed box, multi-linked fully floating atlas live rear axle and it is not difficult to describe LSV171 as one of the best if not the best Mk2 Escort rally cars of our time.

LSV171 also has provenance. The late great ‘if in doubt flat out’ maestro himself Colin McRae tested the car out before father Jimmy McRae drove LSV171 to victory on the 2006 Roger Albert Clark Rally. The following year they won their class in the 2007 British Historic Championship. The strong family connection remained the year after that when in 2008 Alister McRae rather fittingly took class honours in the memorial rally that in so many ways sadly carries his late brother’s name.

Do not wash here

In 2009 LSV171 was treated to a show condition rebuild and has since competed in the 2010 and 2011 Rally Clásico Isla Mallorca in the hands of owner Jim Whelan and co-driver John Atherton. For completeness LSV171 comes with MSA stage rally logbook and Historic Rally Vehicle Identity Form, plus MoT and tax until May 2014.

Clearly not for the feint hearted LSV171 has a totally realistic price estimate of £65,000 to £85,000 for any serious collector or competitor who craves a combination of cracking history and genuine class winning specification to enjoy at we truly hope the full 9,500rpm. In fact I’ll leave you with that spine tingling thought and maybe if we’re all lucky Silverstone Auctions will be able to bottle it and offer it for sale to us lesser mortals so that we can all enjoy this very special RS1800 as well.
